Kroger Appoints Walmart Veteran Greg Foran as CEO to Bolster Grocery Competition
Kroger Co. has named Greg Foran, former CEO of Walmart U.S. and Air New Zealand, as its new chief executive in a strategic MOVE to intensify its rivalry with Walmart in the grocery sector. Foran's tenure at Walmart was marked by 20 consecutive quarters of domestic sales growth and a focus on digital transformation—a competency Kroger urgently needs to refine, according to UBS analysts.
The appointment comes as Kroger's proposed merger with Albertson's was blocked in late 2024, forcing the company to seek alternative strategies to defend its market share. Traditional supermarkets face mounting pressures, including pharmacy revenue declines and competition from both digital-native platforms and discount retailers. Foran is expected to prioritize operational fundamentals like competitive pricing and wages before overhauling Kroger's e-commerce playbook.
